What Should You Eat Before Playing Golf?

by Joseph Hardison / October 8, 2020

Golf these days has become more than a sport, evolving in such a way that it has turned into a lifestyle. Some people may not realize that watching what they eat is vital in improving one’s golf game.

Let us walk you through the importance of nutrition in golf, and suggest a few foods to eat before your tee time.

Nutrition in golf

Having a diet with less than the required level of nutrients can lead to fatigue, both physically and mentally. This can lead to a loss in decision-making ability, and you may be at risk of losing a round. Eating well prior to tee time can supply you with more than enough energy during the game.

What to eat the night before?

To prepare for your game, start the night before. We recommend a meal of lean protein, such as fish or chicken. Make sure you consume this one to two hours before bedtime to ensure that you body has time to properly digest your food.

In addition to this, add some high-fiber foods like sweet potato and spinach. These are also packed with vitamins and antioxidants.

Try to avoid starchy food like pasta or pizza as they take longer for your body to digest and you may feel tired and lethargic in the morning. Other foods that are high in fat may leave you feeling bloated. It should be a given, but be sure to avoid alcohol before your game so that you stay refreshed and fully alert.

What to eat before your game?

On the morning of your game, try to wake up at least an hour and a half before your tee time in order to make a proper breakfast.

A bowl of high-fiber cereal with low-fat yogurt and fruit will give you enough energy to combat fatigue. For something a little heavier, have some scrambled eggs and wholewheat toast, with a side of hard coffee to wake yourself up.

If you are in a hurry, bring your coffee with you and drink it on the way to the course. You may pack a small sandwich and some unsalted nuts to snack on for more energy.

Conclusion

Now you know that forming good eating habits is essential in excelling at golf. Once you try out these suggestions, you may notice a difference in your energy levels, alertness, and overall, your progress at golf. We hope that these diet tips help you on your way to improving your physique when it comes to the sport you love.
